Goodbye 2016 and hello 2017! We’re ringing in the new year by looking ahead to the top wellness trends of the new year. These trends aren’t limited to our diet, either. Remember: everything you do can either help or hurt your overall wellness. Consider making a resolution to evaluate the way in which your wellness is affected by what you eat and do every day.
1. Plant-based protein
The verdict is in: animals don’t have to be our only (or greatest) source of protein. Plant proteins are showing up in our smoothies, nutrition bars, and even (vegan) burgers. Not only are these proteins better for our health, but they’re better for the environment! Plant proteins include brown rice, hemp, pumpkin and alfalfa sprout. Fill your smoothies with all your favorite types of plant protein!
2. Inflammation-fighting superfoods
As science advances, medical researchers are discovering that inflammation is related to many of the ailments we find our self faced with in life. In fact, many people claim that inflammation is related to every aspect of our health. Obesity, ADD/ADHD, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, migraines, thyroid issues, dental issues, cancer, Crohn’s disease, and acne are only a few health issues directly related to inflammation in the body.
So it’s no surprise that in 2017, inflammation-fighting superfoods will be the next trend - even Starbucks has hopped on the bandwagon; they will be implementing a new inflammation-fighting drink called Chile Mocha. Other inflammation-fighting superfoods include bilberry, broccoli, hemp seeds, onions and garlic, spinach, ginger, and turmeric. So make sure to add these to your grocery list this new year!
Most of our body is made of water, so we have to drink a lot of it! However, most of our body is also made of collagen, so why don’t we consume a lot of it? In 2016 we saw a surge in consumption of bone broth (which has tons of benefits, including immune support and strong bones), a great source of collagen. Plus, collagen-rich powders and bottled drinks are becoming increasingly popular. This fibrous protein is known for promoting shiny hair, strong nails, and healthy digestion. Here’s to the year of collagen!
4. Natural makeup
Get ready to go au-natural! Swapping a made-up face for a natural complexion is a new trend in 2017, and it’s a huge promotion of wellness in the form of self-love. Since celebrities like Alicia Keys and Kylie Jenner have been rocking the no-makeup look and even posting natural selfies with the hashtag #NoMakeup, this trend has caught momentum. Embrace the natural beauty trend with DIY products you can make from superfoods you already have in your pantry!
5. Recovery rules
With high-intensity workouts ruling the exercise world this year, it’s no wonder that recovery will be of utmost importance in 2017. Recovery is super important for your body, especially when your workouts are rigorous. And the best thing about recovery is that it can be done in a plethora of ways; from yoga to simply rolling out your muscles, there are tons of fun tactics to let your body chill. Plus, new wellness apps and devices make recovery easier by tracking your sleep and heart rate. From the looks of it, the universe is begging us to use this new year to recover.
Brain power smoothie! A blueberry avocado smoothie packed with delicious ingredients that are great for brain health.
We figured since summer has ended, pool parties, barbecues and beach trips (hello, snacks!) that we could all use a little detox.
“Detox” tends to invoke some scary thoughts, doesn’t it? As if we need to immediately remove everything in our pantry, take on a strict diet or just stop eating altogether. But it doesn’t have to be– no, it shouldn’t be this way!
Detoxing can have a wonderful effect on our bodies, and it’s possible to do it without struggle or restriction. What if I told you that you can hit the reset button and give your digestive system a break just by adding a couple key ingredients to your morning smoothie?
Here’s one of my favorite detox recipes, made with our cleansing Berry Powder Blend, which will fuel your body and mind from the inside out. It contains rich amino acid, vitamins and minerals to help aid digestive system and clear the body of imbalances, toxins and wastes.
Infused waters are simple to make and absolutely stunning. Never get bored with hydration again!
*If using sparkling water, consume within a few hours to preserve carbonation.
*Remove rinds from citrus if the water tastes too bitter.

Phytonutrients. Thermogenesis. Applied Kinesiology. Neurogenesis. Bombarded with a bevy of confusing terms, syndromes and other conditions, is it a wonder that the average person doesn’t even know where to begin their journey toward health and wholeness. What if, like a car, you knew what fuel and operating conditions were necessary for optimal performance? Sadly, if you’re like most Americans, you have spent a lifetime running your body into the ground. Starting today, you can learn how to provide your body with the materials and means to reach your best state of health. Now is the time to turn that Pinto into a Porsche and live the life you’ve always dreamed.
Let’s start with fuel. It’s no secret that a car won’t even start without the proper fuel. The same is true of your body. Without consuming the right blend of vitamins, minerals, probiotics and enzymes, you run the risk of losing traction, power and the ability to get from “Point A” to “Point B”. What’s more, continually depriving your body of the fuel it needs to thrive, or even survive, will lead to costly repairs and may even land you permanently in park.
In a similar vein, without enough water or oxygen, adding fuel is fruitless. Without the magic spark of combustion, gasoline merely weighs down your car. Similarly, consuming sufficient water and keeping oxygen moving through your lungs will help your body to cleanse itself of toxins, deliver vital nutrients to where they are needed and rev up your metabolism, keeping you slimmer and energized! And, speaking of energy, just as your car’s battery needs to run to keep all circuits powered at peak efficiency, so your body needs to become and remain active; when you move, your muscles, heart, lungs, brain and other vital organs get the raw materials needed for replenishment, repair and restoration.
When it comes to a sustainable exercise program, getting started is often the hardest part. Think of it like planning a road trip. You can’t hit the road until you FUEL up! It’s the same with our bodies. When we consume nutrient depleted, fattening empty calories, we’re not going to feel like doing much of anything, except possibly eating more as our bodies search in futility for the vital nutrition it craves. Remember, our bodies don’t want to be FULL, our bodies NEED to be FUELED. Just like our car! When we consume nutrient dense super foods, we feel the effects and want to move!
Giving your body the rest it needs will help you to recharge and relax, so stress won’t stop you from getting to where you want to be. Consider taking time to relax and recharge the equivalent of keeping your car in a garage; while you may not notice much of a difference at first, in time you will become much more rapidly faded and worn if you never seek some shelter. So, if you take the time to take proper fuel, water, oxygenation, exercise and rest, as well as attend routine health appointments, your new body will take you places you have yet to imagine.
1. Cut Cravings
We have all experienced carb cravings! Science shows that gluten can actually be addictive, leading your body to crave foods containing it. And, most foods high in gluten content, such as pasta, bread, and cereal, contain little nutritional value. By cutting out gluten, you can reduce your carb cravings, and make room in your diet to enjoy more nutritional foods such as fruits and veggies!
2. Clearer Cognitive Thinking
The Paleo Diet’s article “Gluten and The Brain”, states, “In regards to cognitive function, as far back as 2004, scientists have shown improvements in the frontal region of the brain, in subjects consuming a gluten-free diet.”
Certain chemicals in gluten have been shown to travel from the gut to the brain during digestion. Studies suggest that eliminating gluten in your diet can support healthy brain functioning.
3. Reduced Inflammation
Wheat is a pro-inflammatory agent, and it is rapidly converted to sugar in your body. Consuming large quantities of gluten can spike your insulin levels and result in cellular inflammation.
So, cutting gluten from your diet can promote weight-loss and overall health and wellness.
At Bennie Blends, all our superfood products are vegan, organic, kosher… and gluten-free! So stock up on Bennie Blends Superfoods and start your gluten free diet today.
A little red fruit called the goji berry contains the secret to limitless health and an ageless body.
As the years speed by and our youth slips between our fingertips, we begin to look for ways in which to hold onto what we once had - wrinkle-free skin, pain-free joints, boundless energy and a body untouched by time. While a clean diet, rich in fruits and vegetables, daily exercise, ample sleep and six glasses of water a day is our foundation for getting there, there is one thing we can do to really take action. This is to take advantage of a tiny berry called the Goji Berry, or Lycium berry.
The goji berry has been used for over 2,000 years as a traditional medicinal tonic herb, revered for its ability to stimulate hGH (human growth hormone), therefore promoting vitality, longevity, energy and stamina. These tiny berries are a complete protein, contain 21 trace minerals, vitamin A and E, and contain more iron than spinach and more vitamin C than an orange. This makes them vital for clear skin, a strong immune system, good vision and healthy blood. But their most impressive attribute, and their main mode for claiming numerous research studies is their “high-ORAC” content.
Goji berries are one of the highest ORAC foods, making them one of the most protective foods on earth. ORAC stands for oxygen radical absorption capacity – the ability to neutralize free radicals (pro-oxidants), those that are damaging to the cells of the body. The higher the ORAC content, the stronger the antioxidant capability and the ability to protect against degenerative disease, the development of cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and the overall damage of the body’s cells and tissues.
Research suggests that consumption of antioxidant-rich foods, like Goji berries, may slow down, prevent, or reverse the damage that occurs to the body from the natural aging and oxidation processes. This includes body damage from stress, poor nutrition, meat, sugar, alcohol, and chemical exposure… and who doesn’t check off on being guilty of one of those!
Just one handful of goji berries a day is all that it takes. In that one handful, you will receive the unique and powerful nutrients, zeaxanthin, beatine and polysaccharides. Zeaxanthin protects against macular degeneration, betaine supports liver and cardiovascular function, and polysaccharides have anti-infective properties. Not only that, one handful of goji berries will also stimulate the production of SOD (superoxide dismutase), a natural antioxidant able to fight the most dangerous of free radicals.
SOD has been called the youth enzyme for evidence suggests that boosting SOD levels may help guard against disease and extend life span. SOD protects the brain, heart, kidneys, liver and other organs, preventing numerous degenerative diseases, including atherosclerosis, stroke, heart attack, chronic and acute inflammatory conditions, and various other age-related disorders. As if we weren’t convinced enough, research studies have confirmed that goji berries have chemoprotective potential in breast cancer treatment, and can improve bone damage and bone loss while lowering inflammation in arthritic conditions. One other very interesting study revealed that goji berries enhance the efficacy of the influenza (flu) vaccination – how curious!
